Why You Should Stop Wearing Polyester This Summer

We've all been there: you step outside in a sharp new outfit, and within ten minutes, you feel like you're trapped in a personal sauna. If you check the tag on that stifling shirt, there's a high probability it reads 100% Polyester. While polyester is durable and wrinkle-resistant, it is arguably the worst fabric choice for the summer heat.

It traps heat like a greenhouse. Polyester is a synthetic fibre derived from petroleum — essentially, plastic. Because plastic is non-porous, polyester fabrics have very low breathability. Instead of allowing your body heat to escape, polyester reflects it back onto your skin, causing your core temperature to rise faster than it would in natural fibres.

The 'sweat seal' effect. One of the biggest myths is that all polyester is moisture-wicking. While high-end athletic blends are engineered for performance, standard fashion polyester is actually hydrophobic — it doesn't absorb sweat, it traps it against your skin. The result is that uncomfortable, slimy sensation where your clothes stick to your back the moment you break a sweat.

It amplifies odour. Research shows that micrococcus bacteria — the kind that creates body odour — thrives on synthetic fibres far better than on cotton or wool. Since polyester traps sweat and skin oils in its plastic-like weave, it creates a literal breeding ground for bacteria.

Skin irritation and heat rash. For those with sensitive skin, summer polyester is a recipe for disaster. The combination of trapped heat, friction, and lack of airflow often leads to miliaria — commonly known as heat rash. Natural fibres allow the skin to breathe and stay dry, significantly reducing the risk.

If you're clearing polyester out of your summer wardrobe, look for natural alternatives. Linen — the king of summer fabrics, highly breathable, dries almost instantly. Best for beach days, outdoor weddings, casual Fridays. Organic cotton — soft, absorbent, allows air to circulate freely around the skin. Best for t-shirts, summer essentials, everyday pieces.

Summer style shouldn't be a struggle. By choosing natural fibres over synthetics, you aren't just upgrading your look — you're investing in your physical comfort and skin health.
